Step 2 — Apply for a municipal spaza shop permit

Every metro now has an online portal. The most active ones are:

• City of Johannesburg — apply on the Joburg eServices portal.

• eThekwini (Durban) — online Business Support Unit portal.
• City of Cape Town — Informal Trading online application.

Step 3 — Register for tax on SARS eFiling

Register at sarsefiling.co.za. Most spaza shops qualify as a micro business under the Turnover Tax system — a single flat rate, no VAT paperwork until you exceed R1 million turnover.

Step 4 — Health & food-safety certificate (Certificate of Acceptability)

If you sell food, request an inspection through your municipality's environmental health online portal. Free. The inspector visits, checks hygiene, and issues the certificate — usually within 14 days.

Step 5 — UIF and workers' registration

If you employ anyone (even family), register on ufiling.co.za.

Step 6 — Open a business bank account

Capitec Business, TymeBank Business and FNB First Business Zero all support fully online opening with only your CIPC certificate and ID.
